The Backyard Writer’s Workshop was established by Emma Copley Eisenberg out of UPenn’s Kelly Writers House in Spring 2011. Our Workshop works like a workshop should: a Backyard Writer will submit his or her piece in advance of a meeting, all other members will critically and compassionately read said piece, and all Writers will then meet and workshop twice-said piece, with the aim of bettering that piece, sometimes toward publication, sometimes not. Since the Workshop’s inception in 2011, it has seen over ten pieces of short fiction and nonfiction through to publication, hosted several readings, and become something of a force in Philadelphia’s budding literary scene.
